Spotted Cucumber Beetle

These cute, yet destructive, common garden pest feed on more than 250 plant species - corn, cucumber, pumpkin, squash, soybean, sweet potato, peanut and other legumes to name a few. Adult beetles, like the one in this photo, chew holes in plant foliage, transmit disease causing bacterium, and their larvae feed on roots and tunnel through stems.

It's important to be familiar with your gardens visitors. After spotting this little guy, I pulled out my Google Lens app to ID him. Long and yellow-green with 12 black spots on the forewings. The head and legs are black and they have beaded, black antennae. He checked all the boxes, so he had to go. Consider this his obituary photo.

This resource from the UT Extension provides more information and a few options on controlling them in your garden.
